  • Client Case Study 1

Co-creation of a leadership development framework for Psychiatrists, Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP)

Challenge: Funded by the Victrorian Department of Health, RANZCP were charged to lead a project to develop a framework and leadership development program/s that facilitate and support the aspirations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System Final Report Recommendations. The framework was to be created by and for psychiatrists, in collaboration with people with a lived and living experience (LLE) of mental ill health and recovery, including consumers, carers, families and supporters.

Solution: Leading the project in support of the Working Group we developed a practical, hands-on co-design capability program where they learnt the principals of co-design alongside scoping the project, utilising stakeholder input to guide and shape the project from the beginning. Stakeholders, and particular those with LLE were engaged all throughout the project and two LLE representatives were later added to the Working Group. In addition to the framework, competencies, self-assessment tool and resources, there is a pilot of three online learning modules and podcast episodes.

Results: The framework has been incredibly well received across a variety of stakeholders from psychiatrists, key education and CPD committees, internal education and specialist teams and LLE contributors. The outcome is a comprehensive and inclusive framework that was only possible due to the generous sharing and coming together of rich and diverse experiences, expertise, knowledge and skills. It's being seen as the first of its kind and although currently Victorian based, there is great capacity and interest to roll the framework out bi-nationally. You can find the framework here.

Co-design project to support the design of a Children's Rehabilitation Centre, Barwon Health

Challenge: Support a team of clinicians to gather insights from children and their families to inform the architectural design and build of a Children's Rehabilitation Centre in the Geelong Region.

Solution: We designed a HCD capability program that was delivered to the team of clinicians, supporting them with the engagement with children and families to determine their wants, needs and pain points for the future rehabilitation centre. We worked through the process together, with them learning the skills, applying them and being supported and guided throughout.

Results: A series of face to face learning modules, co-design workshops with children and families, ongoing engagement and sharing of outputs as they emerged, and a final report detailing all findings and outcomes. This co-design approach was truly embraced by the team and went on to deeply inform the architectural design and build of the new Children's Rehabilitation centre. Please see video case study below.

Design Sprint to inform re-design of flagship leadership program, Leadership Victoria

Challenge: Leadership Victoria were looking for an external facilitator to partner with them in engaging their alumni to re-design their flagship Williamson Community Leadership Program.

Solution: We worked with the internal team to design and deliver a three day "design sprint like" workshop series, that engaged them in co-design activities to facilitate the review of the leadership program. This included gathering alumni insights through 1:1 interviews prior, a one day session framing the problem and preparing for the alumni workshop, a one day workshop with alumni and a third day collating insights and formulating next steps.

Results: The outcome of the design sprint was incredibly helpful to the team and was used to form the basis of a re-design of the program to be contemporary, leading practice and aligned to the goals of the organisation and expectations of participants (and alumni).
